Making a presentation to get the job

As if presentation and public speaking weren’t already crucial to succeeding in business, Chris Cunningham of Appssavvy just upped the ante.

Cunningham, co-founder and CEO of the social media-focused marketing firm, makes promising Appssavvy job applicants clear a final hurdle: Give a presentation to five to seven members of the firm’s management team.

Cunningham explained his logic in a recent interview published in The New York Times, calling the presentation requirement an “extra layer of protection.” Applicants are given a real-life company example from which to create and deliver a presentation.

“If someone can come up with a great idea for the proposal and present it without becoming nervous or uncomfortable, and hold their own in the Q& A, you have a slam dunk,” Cunningham told The Times.

Those with the skills to create and deliver a solid presentation turn out to be all-stars, in Cunningham’s experience. Those who founder are bad hires the company avoided making.
